God Tells Us: Don’t Be Afraid
Fear can suck the life out of us. It crushes our courage, leaving us anxious and hollow, and convinces us safety is the ultimate goal. But even in moments like these, we are reminded to come boldly to the throne without fear. When we worship safety, we miss out on loving deeply, giving generously, and dreaming wildly. Jesus understood the chokehold of fear—and He addressed it more than any other command.
Think of the disciples in that dark, storm‑tossed boat in the middle of the night. Sheets of rain pelted the deck, and waves threatened to swamp them. Out of the darkness they saw Someone walking on water toward them. It was Jesus. He called out, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27 NIV).
Then He climbed into the boat, and immediately the wind died down and the sea grew calm. In the craziest storms, He doesn’t just speak peace—He steps into the chaos and brings it to rest. Our job? Keep our eyes on Him, not the tempest.
- “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.” (Isaiah 41:10 NIV)
- “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 NIV)
- “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you… Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27 NIV)
God promises He will never leave or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV), whether the skies are blue or the storms rage. His faithfulness isn’t tied to our courage—it stands firm on who He is.
Fear: God‑Wired and Purposeful
God wired our brains to experience fear. It’s a primary emotion designed to alert us to danger. When God says, “Do not fear,” He’s not asking us to shut down a part of our brain. His ideal disciple isn’t an emotionless robot—it’s someone who learns where to take fear.
- Where do you go when fear grips you? Who or what do you cling to?
- God wants us to bring our fears to Him. In His presence, fear can become the springboard to faith.
Fear can be paralyzing in this broken world—it’s real and powerful. Yet God is more powerful. He doesn’t just remove fear; He promises to be with us in the storm, empowering us to take the next step of faith, even when our hearts tremble.
God Also Tells Us: Come Boldly to the Throne
We often think boldness toward God is presumptuous. But He commands us to approach Him with confidence:
- “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence…” (Hebrews 4:16 NIV)
Boldness isn’t irreverence—it’s obedience. God beckons us, inviting intimate conversation, mercy, and help exactly when we need it.
Remember the Canaanite woman who pressed in despite the silence? She told Jesus, “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” (Matthew 15:27 NIV). Her faith‑driven boldness moved Jesus to honor her request. That’s the kind of audacious trust we’re called to.
James reminds us, “You do not have because you do not ask God.” (James 4:2 NIV). God delights in our prayers—our raw, courageous, humble petitions.
Why We Can Be Bold
Because Jesus, our High Priest, empathizes with every fear, every weakness:
- “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses… he was tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.” (Hebrews 4:15 NIV)
He lived our life, faced our storms, and emerged victorious. His one‑time sacrifice on the cross paid the debt we could never pay (Hebrews 9:26 NIV). We approach not on our own merit, but on His finished work.
If you’re wondering how God could possibly forgive you, He already has: Jesus forgets your sins—as far as the east is from the west. Read more about that powerful truth here.
Practical Encouragement for Today
- When fear whispers you’re alone, remember: Jesus is in the boat with you.
- When doubt tells you to shrink back, choose bold prayer—He promises mercy when we ask.
- Keep your eyes on Jesus, not on the winds and waves.
God commands two life‑changing imperatives:
- Do not be afraid.
- Come boldly to the throne of grace.
As you step into today, may your heart echo these commands—anchored in His presence, unshaken by fear.
Reflect:
- What storm are you fixated on rather than Jesus?
- What bold request have you held back from God?
“The LORD himself goes before you… he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV)
