I’ve responded to plenty of fires where the flames already took hold—where by the time we got there, it was all-in.
No more warning signs.
No smoke alarms chirping.
No smell of trouble creeping in.
Just full-on fire.
Sometimes that’s exactly how life hits too. One moment you’re coasting. The next, the flames are already at your feet.
But here’s what I’ve learned in fire and in faith: Jesus doesn’t always show up before the fire. But He shows up in it. And when He does, it changes everything.
You Don’t Get to Pick the Moment
In the fire service, you don’t get to choose the time of day, the house, or the outcome. You go when the alarm hits, and you fight what’s there.
Same with real life.
- The call that changes everything: your doctor’s voice on the line.
- The blindsiding betrayal.
- The moment you realize you can’t fix it.
You didn’t ask for it—but here it is. Fire. And it’s not going to wait while you figure out how to be brave.
Does Your Faith Hold When It’s Hot?
It’s easy to talk about trust when the skies are blue. But what about when the house is coming down around you?
That’s where the disciples found themselves.
They didn’t just follow Jesus when it was miracles and praise. They followed Him when the fire got real—when crowds turned, when Rome closed in, when faith wasn’t popular or safe.
They had to decide:
Would they run when it burned—or follow when it hurt?
He Still Shows Up
The message of the Gospel isn’t just about heaven later. It’s about presence now.
Jesus didn’t shout instructions from a distance—He entered the smoke with us. He walked into the mess. He met the broken. And He didn’t just show up at the beginning—He showed up in the middle of the fire.
“When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.”
– Isaiah 43:2
Real Faith is Forged in Fire
If you’re walking through it right now, hear this:
- You don’t need to have it all together.
- You don’t need to pretend it doesn’t hurt.
- You don’t need perfect prayers or clean theology.
You just need to hang on.
Sometimes, all you can do is crawl through the smoke—but even that is enough when Jesus is beside you.
Final Word
We don’t get to choose our fires. But we do get to choose what we believe in them.
And I can tell you—from years in smoke and chaos:
Jesus still shows up in the fire.
And when He does… He brings people out.
