“Such a person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.”
— James 1:7 (NIV)
James is speaking about the person who asks God for wisdom but does it with a divided mind—part trusting God, part doubting whether He will really answer.
We’ve all been there.
Sometimes we pray, but in the back of our minds we’ve already decided the situation won’t change. Other times we ask God for direction while still holding tightly to our own plan. It’s a kind of spiritual hesitation—wanting God’s help but not fully trusting Him with the outcome.
James is reminding us that faith isn’t just saying the words of a prayer. It’s approaching God with a settled heart, willing to trust Him even before the answer comes.
That doesn’t mean perfect faith. It simply means coming honestly, without trying to keep one foot in trust and the other in doubt.
There’s a quiet strength that comes when we learn to place the whole matter in God’s hands.
