Matthew 5:6 has become more meaningful to me over the years.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
— Matthew 5:6 (NIV)
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that knowing what is right and actually doing what is right are often two different things.
Most of us have experienced that struggle in one form or another. We know the right response, the right attitude, or the right decision, yet we still find ourselves falling short. The older I get, the more aware I become of that reality in my own life.
Maybe that’s what stands out to me about this verse. Jesus doesn’t say blessed are those who have already arrived. He says blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.
There is a difference between wanting what is right and simply settling for whatever comes naturally. None of us pursue God’s ways perfectly, but a genuine desire for what is right matters.
The encouraging part is that God sees that desire. He promises that those who genuinely long for His ways will not be left empty.
Maybe that hunger itself is evidence that He is already at work.
