If you’ve ever felt like the skeptic in the fire, questioning everything you thought you believed—you’re not alone.
I’ve been on the scene when the roof collapsed. When the smoke was so thick we couldn’t see our hands in front of our face. When the heat pressed in like a wall.
But I’ve also stood just outside the chaos—watching the bystanders. Eyes wide. Frozen. Not even sure if the fire was real.
That tension? That uneasy hesitation?
It might sound strange, but it’s familiar to a guy named Thomas, too.
Why Doubt Doesn’t Disqualify You—Lessons from a Skeptic in the Fire
We tend to remember Thomas for one thing: doubt. The nickname Doubting Thomas has stuck around for centuries like soot that never quite washes off.
But what if doubt wasn’t his failure… but the very start of his faith?
After Jesus rose, the disciples were buzzing. But Thomas? He couldn’t just go with the crowd. He wanted hard evidence.
“Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
— John 20:25 (NIV)
Sound familiar?
Sometimes it’s not that we don’t want to believe—it’s that the fire’s already scorched us. We’ve seen loss. We’ve stood by hospital beds. We’ve prayed… and didn’t see the answer.
Jesus Walks Into the Middle of It
Now here’s the wild part…
Most of us would’ve backed off or written him off completely.
But not Jesus. He steps right into the thick of it—right into the doubt—and meets Thomas right where he is.
He walks straight into the room, looks at the skeptic, and says:
“Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
— John 20:27 (NIV)
Jesus wasn’t offended by his honesty. He didn’t rebuke him.
He showed up in the fire of Thomas’s doubt and invited him closer.
And Thomas? He didn’t just believe. He said:
“My Lord and my God!”
— John 20:28 (NIV)
One of the clearest, most powerful confessions of Jesus in all of Scripture.

Firefighters, Skeptics, and Second Chances
As a firefighter, I’ve seen what it means to be surrounded by fire—and still hold the line.
As a follower of Christ, I’ve learned that sometimes it’s in the fire where our questions get answered.
Thomas reminds us that doubt isn’t the end of the story.
Jesus is still willing to meet us right where we’re standing—gear on, face smudged, uncertain—and offer us proof that changes everything.
