Lessons from Mark 6 for Every Believer—Whether You Grew Up in Church or Came Late to the Party
“He could not do any miracles there… He was amazed at their lack of faith.” – Mark 6:5–6
We tend to assume two very different lies when familiarity or insecurity hold back our faith—especially depending on where we started in our walk with Jesus.
If you grew up in church, you might think you’ve got this Christian thing figured out. Sunday school? Check. Youth group? Check. Baptized before high school—check. You know the stories. The verses. The songs.
But knowledge isn’t faith. Familiarity isn’t surrender.
And if you came to faith later in life, maybe after some bruises and scars, you might think you’re not qualified. Not holy enough. Not ready. You watch others walk confidently in their faith and wonder if you missed a class or two.
Mark 6 tackles both of these head-on—and Jesus doesn’t hold back.
The Danger of Just “Knowing About” Jesus
When Jesus returned to his hometown, people didn’t exactly roll out the red carpet. This was the place where folks watched him grow up—where they knew him as the carpenter, not the Christ.
They didn’t see a Savior—they saw a kid from around the corner.
“He could not do any miracles there… He was amazed at their lack of faith.”
Not because Jesus lacked power. But because the people lacked faith.
That should make us pause. You can be around Jesus… and still miss Him entirely. You can be familiar and still be far off.
I’ve Felt Unqualified Too
I’ll be honest—this hits home for me.
Even now, I sometimes wrestle with that feeling of not being qualified. Not for ministry, not for writing, not for sharing anything with authority. And especially when it comes to sharing faith with people who really know you—family, close friends, people who remember who you were, not who you’re becoming.
You can almost hear it:
“Oh, now you’re Mister Holy?”
“Didn’t you used to…? And let’s be real—I’ve seen you screw up. Just recently, too.”
But passages like this remind me of two critical truths:
- It’s not about how qualified I feel—because my Heavenly Father is the one who qualifies.
- You can’t stay stuck in the past. No matter what others say or think, you keep looking forward and running the race God gave you.
If you’ve ever questioned your worth or place in God’s story, this post on what it really means to be adopted into God’s family might speak directly to that need.
When Jesus Sends the Unqualified
Right after that rejection in Nazareth, Jesus responds in a surprising way.
He doesn’t get offended. He doesn’t regroup. He expands the mission.
He calls the Twelve, sends them out two by two, and gives them authority. But He tells them to take nothing with them.
No food. No money. No backup plan.
Just His mission. His presence. His power.
And here’s the kicker: He doesn’t send them because they’re ready. They’re ready because He sends them.
They weren’t experts. They weren’t flawless. They were just willing—and that’s all Jesus needed.
When Familiarity or Insecurity Still Hold Us Back Today
If you’ve grown up around faith, don’t mistake exposure for engagement. Jesus isn’t impressed by our spiritual résumés—He’s moved by faith and obedience.
And if you feel unqualified? Good. That’s exactly the type of person Jesus tends to use.
Because this was never about you having it all figured out. It’s about trusting the One who does.
So Where Are You?
- Step out.
- Trust Him.
- Go where He sends.
- And watch what He can do through an ordinary life fueled by extraordinary faith.
Familiarity doesn’t guarantee faith. Insecurity doesn’t disqualify it.
What matters most is whether you’ll respond to Jesus with trust—today.
What about you?
